Composite decking surfaces have improved over the past decade and multiple sources and colors are available. Many times the old deck needs to be rebuilt to remove dry-rot caused by moisture being trapped and the growth of fungus. Repairs are best in pressure treated wood but existing wood can be protected by adding tape to the top surface. Composite decking is on average 7/8” thick and many old decks use 2x6 lumber that is 1.5” thick. Thus many older decks have floor joist set at 24” apart not the 26: on center required for a composite deck. Such upgrades have to be factored in to the remodel cost.

Patio covers are made to provide a sun filter shade of as a water proof cover. Both are available in aluminum which is powered coated and the total project carries a lifetime warranty. Shade structures use either 1.5x1.5 square tubes set 1.5” apart or 2”x2” tubes set 2” apart. For water proof lids either a single sheet of standing seam metal in installed or a foam sandwich of 3.5” thick foam between two aluminum sheets is used. The latter roof is much superior and people can walk on it and it provides insulation so that no condensate ever develops and drip down below.

Wood fences come in different styles that range from a simple dog-eared design to one with a 2x6 placed along the top. All fencing that we install use pressure treated 4x4 wood that is set into concrete. The pickets are normally Cedar but various qualities of Red Wood are also used. Only externally protected screws are used throughout the building process. Normally these fences are not painted and if that is desired we recommend the pickets be painted before assembly in order to get paint on the edges of the pickets.

Stainless steel cables used for handrails have become very fashionable. They are modern looking and very open. The posts can be wood but we feel that destroys the look and add a maintenance issue. Normally the posts are aluminum with a given color selected including metallic as shown in the above photo. Stainless steel posts are also used but their cost is more than the aluminum.
